Pittston Area grabs title at Kiwanis Tourney

The Pittston Area Patriots finally got what they were looking for this year at the Tunkhannock Kiwanis Tournament. Last year the Pats came into the tourney hoping for a team championship, Delaware Valley dashed those hopes out-pointing PA by 50 points. This year Pittston Area put a 40 point cushion between them and 2nd place Wyalusing, taking home the team trophy with 227.50 points to Wyalusing's 187.00.

"The team title has eluded us here for quite some time, we have always had good teams come in here, it just seemed like we could never put it together," said Pittston Area head coach Matt Giampietro."I was thinking we might be able to win it this year, our kids wanted it and they went after it on both days.

Four Patriot wrestlers were crowned champs at their respective weight class (135) Robbie Robinson, (160) Dave Woodall, (171) Jeff Dunn, (275) Steve Stoss. Nikko Ardo was also in the finals at 112 lbs., but suffered on lost to Jason Kalmanowicz of Tunkhannock. Ardo would settle for 2nd.

Pittston Area has been jelling as a team over the last few weeks, they finished 2nd at the TL Tourney and now 1st at the Kiwanis. Wyoming Valley Conference dual meets will be heating up in the coming weeks and what a battle it will be in Divison 1.

"We are starting to come together as a team, everyone was watching and routing for each-other over the last two days. If we stay healthy and can keep a strong line-up, we should fare well in dual meet action," said Dave Woodall.

"Our team has been wrestling good since the start of the season, but its early and everyone must keep working hard in the room," added Jeff Dunn.

Speaking of the Patriot's wrestling room, that would be the place to take in some mat chat over the holidays with the likes of Jason and James Woodall, John Laboranti and Steve Mytych all making

appearances.

"With guys like that working out in the room all I have to do is sit back a watch," said Giampietro.
