Lyman “Beans” Weaver for many years was the assistant coach for Hall of Fame coach Mal Paul.  In the 1950’s he helped Shamokin set-up its elementary wrestling program and along with Coach Paul traveled to neighboring schools of Ashland, Northumberland, and Selinsgrove to set-up they’re wrestling programs.  One former wrestler said it best.  “As mat mentors, they played the classic roles of good cop, bad cop when teaching us to be better wrestlers, and molding our characters to face life as adults with positive moral values.”  It was Coach Weaver we could go to for some comfort.”  Coach Weaver was an assistant coach for Larry Lauchle and Jerry Swope.  From his wrestling days at Shamokin High School in 1938, while placing 2nd at states in 1941, Coach Weaver then enrolled at Millersville State College where he wrestled for Hall of Fame Coach, Ted Rupp.  After graduation from college, Beans found his way back to Shamokin, where his contributions and coaching achievements are legendary.

Ralph Wetzel graduated from Bloomsburg University in 1959.  Due to injuries he never wrestled in college, but was at every practice and worked out with the team.  He sat next to Coach Russ Houck during competitions, taking notes.  Coach Houck encouraged Ralph to coach and helped him get his first coaching job as an assistant coach at Clearfield High School.  In 1964 Coach Wetzel was named head coach at Hatboro-Horsham High School where he coached until 2000.  In 1970 his wrestling team won the league championship.  It was the first boys championship in any sport in 29 years.  His 36-year coaching record was 307-225-9.  Ralph was one of three Co-founders of the District I Coaches Association and is widely considered the unofficial “Dean of District I Wrestling”.
